The Story of Wigwam Wellbeing
40 years experience
Not for profit
Serving the West Midlands
Wigwam Wellbeing was founded by Janet Wyatt, a mental health nurse who has spent more than 30 years supporting people with complex needs.
Back in the early 1990s, Janet saw first-hand how few services existed for younger adults living with dementia and other mental health conditions. Most care homes were designed for older people, and many weren’t equipped to meet the emotional, psychological, and social needs of younger residents. That gap inspired Janet to open her own family home, creating the warm, specialist environment that grew into JW Care - now a well-respected group of small, specialist homes across the West Midlands.
But Janet wanted to go further. Through Wigwam Wellbeing, she set out to create a not-for-profit organisation focused on prevention and everyday wellbeing - offering activities and support that can slow or even prevent cognitive decline, and help people live with dignity, purpose, and joy.
Today, Wigwam Wellbeing provides indoor and outdoor activities, day services, healthy meals, and wellbeing programmes for working-age adults living with dementia, ARBD, ABI, and a range of mental health conditions. Every service is person-centred, and every session is designed to create moments of connection, comfort, and growth.
At the heart of Wigwam Wellbeing is the same belief that guided Janet from the very beginning:
see the person, not the diagnosis.
